Understanding Your Colloid Cyst Diagnosis

Hope and Healing Start Here

When you first learn you or a loved one has a colloid cyst, you want answers. You need healing. You’ll find that and more here at AdventHealth Neuroscience Institute, where our skilled team is advancing care for a wide range of brain tumors, including colloid cysts.

What Is a Colloid Cyst?

A colloid cyst is a slow-growing tumor that typically grows near the center of the brain. If it grows large enough, it can put significant pressure on the brain, affecting the flow of fluid.

What Are the Symptoms of a Colloid Cyst?

The most common colloid cyst symptom is a headache, but some patients may not experience any symptoms from the tumor at all. Other symptoms can include confusion, loss of consciousness and memory problems.

How Is a Colloid Cyst Diagnosed?

Your doctor will order diagnostic testing to determine if you or a loved one has a colloid cyst. These tests may include computed tomography (CT scan) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) depending on your unique symptoms, medical history and needs.

How Is a Colloid Cyst Treated?

Since, in the most severe cases, an undiagnosed colloid cyst can cause sudden death, immediate surgery is required. The good news is that surgery usually cures the condition.

Advances in brain surgery, including minimally invasive procedures such as endoscopy, help make colloid cyst surgery safer and more effective. We offer several types of minimally invasive brain surgery at AdventHealth Neuroscience Institute, including:

  • Brain port surgery
  • Endoscopic brain surgery
  • Endoscopic endonasal skull-base surgery
  • Endoscopic microvascular decompression
  • Gamma Knife® surgery
  • Laser interstitial thermal therapy (LITT)
  • Neuroendovascular surgery
