Understanding Your Condition

Headache and Migraine

Chronic or uncommonly strong headaches and migraines can affect your life in ways that only someone who’s experienced them can truly understand. According to the National Headache Foundation, an estimated 45 million Americans suffer from chronic headaches each year. If you happen to be one of them, you’ll find the care and support you need here at the AdventHealth Neuroscience Institute. Our neurologists are experts at helping to identify the cause of your condition and developing the ideal treatment program for you.

There are a few common types of headaches, including:

  • Cluster headaches: This rare headache disorder consists of severe headaches on one side of the head. Other symptoms include red or teary eyes, runny or stuffy nose, flushing or sweating of the face or a sense of restlessness and agitation. They’re called cluster headaches because they often occur back to back for days.
  • Migraines: This severe and sometimes debilitating headache can last between four and 72 hours and is often accompanied by nausea, vomiting and an increased sensitivity to light or sound.
  • Tension headaches: This is the most common form of headache that almost everyone has had at some point. It is usually remedied by a quick trip to the pharmacy for over-the-counter medication like ibuprofen or acetaminophen.
Multiple Sclerosis

Understanding Multiple Sclerosis

Multiple sclerosis, or MS, is a chronic autoimmune disease of the brain and spinal cord (the central nervous system) that disrupts the exchange of information within the brain, and between the brain and body. With MS, there is an abnormal response of the body’s immune system directed against the central nervous system.

Scientists believe MS is triggered by a combination of factors, such as:

  • Environment
  • Genetics
  • Immunology
  • Infections

Symptoms of MS occur due to damage of the central nervous system, and most often include:

  • Fatigue
  • Numbness and tingling
  • Blurred or double vision
  • Weakness
  • Poor coordination or imbalance
  • Pain
  • Depression
  • Problems with memory and concentration

Neuroimmunology and MS Expertise, Diagnosis and Treatment

Neuroimmunology is a subspecialty of medicine that combines neuroscience (the study of the nervous system) with immunology, the study of the immune system.

When the immune system attacks healthy nerve cells, our experts assist in determining if a neuroimmunology condition may be the root cause. Conditions we diagnose include multiple sclerosis, neuromyelitis optica (NMO) and myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein (MOG).

Following the diagnosis of a neuroimmunology condition, our health care providers work with each patient to deliver the best treatment options for their specific needs. Our team will offer support, guidance, and whole-person care at every step.

General Neurology

When it comes to your brain and nervous system, you need a place that considers every aspect of your neurological health. Here, you can expect world-class expertise and leading-edge treatments for the spectrum of neurological conditions. Our experienced neurologists are here to find answers for you and help you overcome seemingly insurmountable challenges.

We bring together clinical research and innovative treatments with an approach that considers the whole you — not just your symptoms. Together, we’ll create the treatment plan that’s best for you, with evidence-based therapies like deep brain stimulation, medication, radiology and physical therapy.

And if surgery is necessary, we offer some of the most advanced approaches in the field, including craniotomy, endoscopic brain surgery, Gamma Knife® radiosurgery and interventional neuroradiology. At every step, you’ll be supported by leading experts and a compassionate team.

Support From the Start

You are certainly not alone on this journey. In fact, more than 50 million other Americans will be diagnosed with a neurological disorder of the brain or central nervous system this year, ranging from severe spinal cord injuries and brain tumors to migraine headaches. Have faith that whatever the case may be, there is always support.

There’s no one in the world quite like you. Which is why we look to develop a treatment program for your neurological health that takes more into account than just your diagnosis. We’ll create a care plan that’s personalized according to your medical history, your family’s medical history and a variety of other factors specifically authentic to you.

If you or a loved one is facing the challenge of neurological impairment, our highly skilled and certified physical, occupational and speech therapists will be by your side. We care for ALS, brain injuries, stroke, neuromuscular disorders, Parkinson's disease and more in a friendly, caring therapy environment with state-of-the-art equipment.
